Today Lennox came up with a great idea for a new literacy center - sight word building with Legos. Pick a sight word, build it, then create a plan to show how you did it. Reverse engineering?
In Writing, we are working on creating informational texts about bats. We are also learning about the editing process. Students used a class-generated list of details about bats to write an alliterative sentence about bats. After students had written their sentences on dry erase boards, I helped them edit for spelling and simple punctuation so that they were ready to "publish" their pieces by writing their sentences on bat cut-outs to hang in the hallway. Here Gioia shares her sentences, "Bats are nursery night fliers. [They are] In the nursery at night. Bats are terrific fliers . They fly at night."
Plant parts help plants grow. Roots help to live. Water goes through the stem. Leaves use light and water to make food. Flowers make seeds. Plant parts help a plant grow. Leaves turn light and water to make food. The roots absorb the water, the water goes up the stem. The roots go down and get water. I am so impressed with how our kindergarteners did with their contractions assessment this week! Most students were able to identify the contractions for each word combination without any help. What I found particularly exciting, though, was the fact that many students made the same mistake on "cannot." Many students brought me a paper that said "cann't." While this isn't correct, this tells me that they are able to do more than just match contractions with words - they understand the rule we learned - you start by pushing the words together, then you take out the vowel and add an apostrophe. "Cann't" (and "willn't" from some students) shows me that they truly understand what they are doing when they are making contractions! Today was a great day for building words with Groups 1 and 2! Evan was on top of the letter sounds and every time I gave him a new word, he spelled it right away! When it was time for independent work, Arianna brought me tons of words she came up with on her own - like BARK, BARN, and FARM. Way to go Groups 1 and 2!

I love teaching kindergarten literacy at STEM! It is amazing to be a part of the reading and writing growth of a kindergarten student. You get to see kids move from knowing some letters and sounds to being enthusiastic readers and young authors. Archives
