We are off to a fantastic start in Kindergarten at STEM Magnet Academy! During our first week of school we learned about Independent Reading. We learned that this is a time for readers to practice by themselves. Independent Reading is even fun for kids who aren't reading fluently yet. In kindergarten, we learn that we can (1) Read the Words; (2) Read the Pictures - and tell ourselves a story; and (3) Retell a Familiar Story - something we may have read before. During Independent Reading, students will usually have something to do to reinforce a skill or strategy we are covering - this week we used highlighter tape to highlight sentences in our reading!

I love teaching kindergarten literacy at STEM! It is amazing to be a part of the reading and writing growth of a kindergarten student. You get to see kids move from knowing some letters and sounds to being enthusiastic readers and young authors. Archives
