I am so impressed with how our kindergarteners did with their contractions assessment this week! Most students were able to identify the contractions for each word combination without any help. What I found particularly exciting, though, was the fact that many students made the same mistake on "cannot." Many students brought me a paper that said "cann't." While this isn't correct, this tells me that they are able to do more than just match contractions with words - they understand the rule we learned - you start by pushing the words together, then you take out the vowel and add an apostrophe. "Cann't" (and "willn't" from some students) shows me that they truly understand what they are doing when they are making contractions!

I love teaching kindergarten literacy at STEM! It is amazing to be a part of the reading and writing growth of a kindergarten student. You get to see kids move from knowing some letters and sounds to being enthusiastic readers and young authors. Archives
