In Writing, we are working on creating informational texts about bats. We are also learning about the editing process. Students used a class-generated list of details about bats to write an alliterative sentence about bats. After students had written their sentences on dry erase boards, I helped them edit for spelling and simple punctuation so that they were ready to "publish" their pieces by writing their sentences on bat cut-outs to hang in the hallway. Here Gioia shares her sentences, "Bats are nursery night fliers. [They are] In the nursery at night. Bats are terrific fliers . They fly at night."

I love teaching kindergarten literacy at STEM! It is amazing to be a part of the reading and writing growth of a kindergarten student. You get to see kids move from knowing some letters and sounds to being enthusiastic readers and young authors. Archives
